In my way of thinking...Mr. Atkins has a conflict of interest in assessing the value of the Stine Lumber Co. property at all. Mr. Atkins may be the tax assessor for Adams County, but he is also affiliated with Atkins Lumber which is in direct competition with Stine Lumber Co. The Board of Supervisors may need to take that under advisement as well.

I am very saddened by the loss of Mrs. Byrne. Through the years I have known her as lovingly directing the care of her husband when he was acutely ill, then dealing with the tragic and untimely death of her son, Mike. I have watched her carry her own personal battles time and time again through her own illnesses. Mrs. Byrne was a genuine lady of character, dignity, compassion, gentility, and wisdom. She would always have a kind soft spoken word of praise and thankfulness in most any situation. I have many very fond and prescious memories of Mrs. Byrne, and she will be terribly missed. My love to her husband, Mr. Donald, and her children, and her grandchildren. Your loss will be shared by the many lives she has touched.

Congratulations to all the participants, nominees, and winners at the Stan Dean Ovation Awards last night. It was a true Natchez Little Theater success. NLT has a tremendous youth force in our community. Congratulations to Dwight, Kristen, Danielle, Rudy, and Sydney who won awards last night, but there are many, many more extremely talented youth involved in the theater. Some of that talent has not even been found yet by these youngsters. This is a meaningful, productive, constructive outlet for the youth of this community. It boosts their self-esteem, gives them a new appreciation for self, and will enhance and enrich their lives forever. Thanks to Layne Taylor for being such a dedicated director of the NLT, and to all the many volunteers who make the theater a success. I cannot wait for opening night of the Wizard of Oz to kick off the 62nd season!!!

So Mr. Stine has to pay taxes on the $7 million that it cost to build that store, and not the $4 million it is worth? If I am reading that right, I think I will protest my taxes in August too....It only cost $29,000 to build my house some 50 years ago. So are we going on the appraised value??? or the cost to build??? Can't go one way for some, and another way for others. I think Mr. Stine has a very valid arguement.

It would be absolutely dreadful if we had to rely on unbiased information from the ND as our only source of information on these meetings. I personally DO go to these meetings, and I would encourage everyone else to attend as well. If it is important enough for you to have such a strong opinion on these blogs, I don't see why more people are not proactive in their city government. That is what I call lazy. There are plenty of people out there who work and are unable to attend these meetings. Ever think that it is important for them to know what is going on UNEDITED...which is how these meetings come across the air. I can speak...I am there...whether these meetings are 30 minutes, or 4 hours, they are aired in their entirity...from the time the meeting is called to order until the meeting is dismissed. As to the original question of "Should the alderman pay to have their meetings televised?" Well, it is not going to be free. It is my understanding that these meetings were originally recorded and put on the air due to increasing "he said, she said" misquotes by the ND. I don't see any improvement in that department, so I DO think these meetings should continue to be recorded and aired and placed within the budget of the city. I think the city should use time constraints and avoid the time-consuming bickering and beguiling a point to death. Make your point, vote on it, then move on. If handeled appropriately, these meetings being televised could be very beneficial for both concerned citizens as well as the city officials themselves. Thats my $.02 worth!!!

The Democrat puts their twist on it again... Julie, your article just proves why cameras need to be in the boardroom. I was there. I heard Watt's speeches. I thought they were a very appropriate dressing down of the people that needed to be called out on accountability. Including the Natchez Democrat. Why do you think the cameras are there in the first place? When the supervisors and aldermen are continuously misquoted, or have a negative slant on their progress, and are constantly misrepresented by this newspaper, it is a defense mechanism. I attend these meetings in person. I am a concerned citizen. I have interest in our city and county government. I know what goes on in these meetings. Then I pick up the Democrat the next morning and say "Was this the same meeting I attended yesterday?" So I understand your concern. The cameras remove the authoratative power of the press to pick and choose the slant they want to take on the meetings. I wish more people were interested enough to attend the meetings, but at least they can have an unbiased version and can form their own opinions by watching it on television.

Each alderman should equally have his/her own travel/expense budget. It should allow several out of town trips, whether it be to Jackson or to Washington, D.C. Once they have spent their travel monies, the travel should come out of their own pockets. That would entice a little more thought, selection, and planning on their part to stay within budget.
On Should Natchez Board of Aldermen vote each time a board member wants to travel?

I have a comment about the videography being removed from the meetings....probably was a good decision by the Mayor to cancel the cameras. He has sense enough to know that his Board of Aldermen are getting pretty explosive and unable to control themselves or their comments. I watch their meetings regularly, and there is so much tension in these meetings. Usually this tension is caused by "snide comments", talking out of order, and just plain disrespect for each other. The Democrat puts some slant on these meetings, or leaves out pertinent details. If you watch the meetings, you are guided by your own opinion. I have my own opinion, and it is often very different from the Democrat write up. I hate to see the cameras removed...budget reasons or not...but having all this dirty laundry aired for all the public to see was probably a good move.

Just FYI: Cable channel 9 (for those of you who have cable) has lots of paid programming where they interview some of the candidates. I know I have seen Freeman, Cox, and Mayfield on there. There are also several programs with information on the Recreation issue that will be on the ballot on Tuesday....just in case anyone is interested.
