Those of you who have said, implied, anything uncomplimentary about Ms. Colson should be ashamed of yourselves. That is if you have a conscience while hiding beneath your anonymity. I know Ms. Colson personally and there could not be a more hard working, kindly, dedicated individual than she. Your implications imply, perhaps, circumstances you know nothing of. You write between the lines. Frankly, I think I'll dispense with reading these trashy comments, leaving it for the N. Dem to fish for future tidbits from the cesspool they've created.

It is truly amazing that Vaughn won't keep up his place. He's had offers to buy the property for many years and has, at least in the past, refused to sell.

But, the point to be made here is that the community cares about the historical treasures in this city. Enough so, that they're volunteering their expertise, time, equipment. And I think those who are helping out here recognize the value of these properties in relationship to the current and potential economic value of our heritage tourism industry. We have much to be thankful for as citizens in this community.

redfusman, I meant no personal offense to you. Sorry I didn't see this earlier, just got home from work. Please do not take my comments personally. I'm just defending a guy who was hired to do a job and seems he's doing his job. Hopefully, he won't bend the rules just to please the politicians. That's the problem here.

redfusman: what are you talking about? Firing the City Planner? He was hired to guide development according to the pre-established laws which make this city the beautiful place it is. And, business-friendly is creating a level playing field for all participants. Do you really think a classy business wants to be located on that highway through Vidalia? Fat Mamas knew the rules, pushed ahead in spite of neighborhood opposition, convinced the board of aldermen to give them everything they wanted and changed the rules for them and then across town honored the wishes of the existing neighborhood and denied developers an opportunity to build a respectable housing development. (the city is being sued now for that one)

Good point, iconoclast. "... Fat Mama's wishes to retain the historic atmosphere they had in the old log cabin downtown without adhering to the historic districts zoning codes...". i find it ironic that Fat Mamas wanted to stay near their previous location to take advantage of the balloon festival. Wasn't the balloon festival started with the help of Historic Natchez Foundation, Ron and Mimi Miller, the preservationist community? And yet, FM turns around and defies all that made their success possible.

Excellent letter, Mr. Scarborough. Thank you!

Please don't hold the Mayor accountable for the school situation. He can encourage, advocate for good schools, choose worthy school board members but he can do little else, legally. City government does not control the school system, it's policies. That "one loud mouth" who caused "chaos" as you point out, destiny, was not then mayor.

So pleased that we have David Carter here working with the community. I really enjoyed the slideshow, Ben. Nice work.

Amazing comments! This situation is NOT about trees. It's about families who have invested in their neighborhood, relied on the legal ordinances to protect their investment and property values. This situation occurred because your city government chose to forgo the ordinances and rule in favor of "friends and allies" from the local courts all the way to Jackson. They, admittedly, regret their mistakes. When a few of the city council members were asked to take a look at what the surrounding homeowners would be facing one of the "officials" said "looks to me like you should just sell". Sell now? After the property values are diminished? Now, I want to know who on that city council is going to be man (woman) enough to stand up and say we made a lot of mistakes in the past and we are now going to relinquish the power to overrule the commissions who are best suited to make the determinations regarding development in the downtown district. At yesterday's meeting a new council member asked how the council could avoid these horrible situations in the future? What happened here, why? Jake responded by saying something about change in planning dept. heads. Well, Jake you had the ordinances in front of you with clear and defining guidelines. And if you didn't have time, didn't care to bother yourself with the task why didn't you let the commissions assigned to the task make the determination without political intervention? There are no viable excuses for this mess. Only Natchez politics as usual! Let's hope for change.

The "blue haired" ladies have nothing to do with the perceived restrictions on "progress". Those women have simply worked together to save a few old homes which people from all over the world come to see. Give them a break! If it wasn't for that effort, which was started forty years ago, this place would have dried up and gone with the wind as did Int. Paper, Armstrong, the 70's oil boom. Natchez CAN HAVE, with visionary leaders, the best of both worlds: respect for the successful heritage tourism industry AND business, jobs. But, it takes vision, hard work on the part of all of us. And yes, attitude has everything to do with it and that includes YOU!

Vidalia may be booming, but I prefer to live in Natchez where we can shop, take care of business, dine and wine, without fear of being run over by eighteen-wheelers.

Thank you, "sayitloud", but I much prefer this and us over Dallas' congestion and Texas-ways.

I read these comments and I honestly wonder why you people, who complain constantly, don't just pick up and go elsewhere, find a really great job, where you can enjoy rows of strip malls, acres of new tract homes, packed four-lanes, and most importantly! No Bluehairs!
