Hysterical hysteria

Published Tuesday, February 19, 2008

It's funny what sparks reader feedback.

I've written hundreds of columns for this newspaper and it never fails that I'm amazed at what sparks massive reader feedback.

I can write about something great and positive in town and a handful of people will chime in, usually with "thanks for writing this" or "I agree wholeheartedly."

But write about something like the mythical antics of the infamous "Natchez Hysterical Society" and things just get crazy.

I wrote a column on Sunday about some of the outlandish things people blame on historic preservation attempts and it was as I'd lit a match.

My comments infuriated some people and rallied others.

In the end, I hope that the after the fur settles back into place that we come away with a better understanding of the other side's position -- even if we don't agree.

Well, I did not get angry, I was just wondering if you had read old issues of the paper that you now publish. I can still remember what life was like in Natchez from my childhood. I remember the disappointments and disgust when developers wanted to do big projects around a town that was thriving at that time only to see the dreams crushed by "The people in charge" It was sickening. But, that was then...and nothing seems to have changed now......

Just think of what The Democrat was like before the current staff got there! I grew up with it, that is the "Demo"? It is somewhat better. It now seems fair and balanced!
