Not-quite Spring Pilgrimage

Published Friday, March 7, 2008

With snowflakes swirling around and a forecasted high temperature tomorrow of only 44 degrees, is it just me or does it not seem like it's time for Spring Pilgrimage to start Saturday?

Does anyone know if it has it ever snowed on the first day of Pilgrimage in the past?

No, but it has snowed several times during Pilgrimage. The one I remember best was the middle of March in 1968. Very deep snow, at least for Natchez! And at least 2 other times while I was growing up.

Cool. I wonder if anyone out there has photographs from the previous snowy Pilgrimages?

I don't know if it was first day of Spring Pilgrimage, but I remember when I was about 10-12, and I'm 52 now, it snowed and it stuck that March. We had about two inches or so of snow which was enough for snowmen, snowball fights and it was great, but it was also a mess.

That's right Freedom it must have been '68!! So I was 12. Thanks for reminding me, oh those were the good ole days!!

I remember it was '68 because I had just broken up with my boyfriend the day before it snowed and I was so sad walking alone in that beautiful downfall. We made up the next week and have been married for 39 years now!

As I remember in '68, I was ten, the azaleas were blooming! It was a striking, colorful contrast against the pure white of the snow.
