Two men were killed Sunday morning in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 84 near McCall Creek.
At about 7:30 a.m. a 1998 Chevrolet truck registered to Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Trooper John Minor veered off the highway in eastern Franklin County and crashed into a tree, a highway patrol spokesman said.
&uot;It hit the tree and burst into flames,&uot; said Staff Sgt. Errol Pierce, public affairs officer. &uot;It was believed to be occupied by two black males.&uot;
Pierce would not confirm whether Minor was driving, or even if he was in the vehicle since the bodies of the two men were burned beyond recognition.
&uot;We’re still running down leads,&uot; Pierce said late Sunday.&160;&uot;Since there were initial reports of who was in the car that ultimately proved false, we’re not going to speculate.&uot;
Families of trooper Minor and of Kevin Ellis of Natchez were contacted to help identify the bodies, but Pierce refused to comment until dental records could be examined to help determine the identities.
&uot;One witness said the vehicle passed him and topped the hill,&uot; Pierce said.&160;&uot;When the witness topped the hill he saw the truck on fire.&uot;
Pierce said the truck traveled 25 to 30 yards off the highway before striking the tree.
The truck was headed eastbound on the highway.
Pierce said there was no sign of skidmarks at the scene.
&uot;They may have just lost control or fell asleep and then lost control,&uot; he said.
