The desire of the Natchez Bulldogs met an immovable object in the eight-ranked Provine Rams Friday night.
Brawn won over desire by the score of 45-0 in a Region 3-5A game.
Provine is easily the class of the Jackson Pubic School teams. The Rams have a 36-1 record against other city schools in the past eight years and have made the Class 5A playoffs eight times in 10 years.
&uot; There is no doubt about it Provine showed why they are the top team in district 5A,&uot; Elbert &uot;Mo&uot; Lyles said.
Part of the Rams secret is a huge offensive line. The line is led by 330-pound tackle Monte Collins. The 10th-grader loomed head and shoulders above the Bulldog defensive line.
The smaller Bulldogs gave the Ram offense all they could handle throughout the game.
&uot;We played a good game defensively,&uot; Lyles said. &uot;We were beat on big plays. When the offense kept struggling, it put more pressure on our defense. The size of Provine finally wore them down.&uot;
Leading the way for the Natchez defense were stalwarts Don Jackson and Cordell William.
The Bulldogs struggled on offense throughout the game. Passing was at a minimum as both teams rammed the ball up the middle on dive plays and counter plays.
The Rams scored on their first possession on a 30-yard run by Anthony Heath.
On the next Bulldog possession, Donald Butler was intercepted by Nate Young of Provine. Young returned the ball to the Natchez 11-yard line.
The Bulldog defense stiffened and held Provine out of the end zone. A field goal attempt by Nate Young was wide.
The&160;Bulldogs momentarily grabbed the momentum by stopping the Rams.
The momentum was short lived as Roderick Conner fumbled a Donald Bulter pitch on an option play. Provine recovered on the Natchez 18-yard line.
Provine quarterback Justin Kelly hit Charlie Anderson for the second Ram touchdown. The touchdown pass was thrown over Bulldog defensive back Dennis Davis.
The scored remained 13-0 until midway through the second quarter. After a Don Jackson fumble on a punt return, Provine took over on the Natchez 23-yard line.
On a fourth and 20 at the 32-yard line, Provine running back Markeece McGinty took the pitch from Justin Kelly and ran 32 yards for a Provine touchdown.
The Rams added a field goal to make the score 24-0 at halftime.
Natchez began the second half with an on side kick. Provine’s Torey Ross recovered the ball.
The Rams ran the same play that scored Markeece McGinty. The second half deja vu resulted in a 45-yard run to the Natchez 15-yard line. The Rams eventually scored to make the tally 31-0.
Provine scored two more touchdowns to complete the scoring 45-0.
Natchez quarterback, Donald Butler, was knocked out of the game with an hand injury toward the end of the game.
