Coaching the Cathedral boys basketball team was not one of Terry Moffett’s New Year’s resolutions. But with the death of Green Wave coach Bill Cameron to a heart attack on Dec. 23, Moffett volunteered his services.
&uot;I knew it would be pretty much impossible to find a coach and teacher to do the same thing Bill was doing so I told them I would do it,&uot; Moffett said. &uot;I think it would be better if it were somebody the kids knew instead of bringing someone in and have to have them go through that adjustment.&uot;
Moffett held his first practice Thursday. His first workout involved talking with the team about Cameron, who , at 52, was in his first season at Cathedral.
&uot;We talked about life and death and how we have to go on, because I’m sure that’s the way Bill would want it,&uot; Moffett said. &uot;I’m not going to change what they’ve been doing, just add to it. We’ll look at where we are in two weeks.&uot;
Cathedral is 7-5 overall and 2-2 in District 6-2A.
Moffett, who is an assistant football coach and head coach of the Cathedral golf team, coached boys basketball at Adams County Christian School in 1987-88.
&uot;It’s an adjustment,&uot; Moffett said. &uot;The only other time I’ve been in the gym was to go to the weight room. I didn’t even know how to cut the lights on. I was making out the practice schedule and was thinking, ‘it’s been a long time since I’ve done this.’&uot;
Moffett, who has led the Green Wave golf team to two state championships in the last three years, said basketball will not interfere with golf.
&uot;We start golf in February and basketball ends in about mid-February,&uot;&160;he said.
Cathedral hosts Loyd Star Tuesday.
