Economic development tops wish list

Once Gov. Ronnie Musgrove’s inauguration is completed on Tuesday, state lawmakers will actually get down to work. Legislative agendas are like opinions … everyone has one. And Miss-Lou leaders are no different.
On their legislative wish lists are such things as getting state funds to help improve Duncan Park’s Golf Course to finding money for the terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Each of the items is important and each will greatly benefit the Miss-Lou.
But perhaps the most important single item that needs legislative help is the restructuring of the Natchez-Adams Economic Development Authority.
It’s been discussed for quite a long time, but received extra attention last January when the EDA’s executive director resigned. It was the perfect time to begin serious discussions of reorganization.
City and county leaders have met several times to discuss exactly how the revamped board should look. All agree its current size — 15 members — is simply too large to get things completed efficiently.
We hope that before lawmakers pass legislation to revamp the EDA, leaders give the public a chance to review the plans and offer input.
No one will argue that we need some form of economic development authority, but some folks have different opinions on exactly how the authority should be created.
If we as a community are to get behind the EDA and support it fully, a consensus must be built before the legislation is passed and it’s too difficult to change.
Now is the time to get folks behind the plan.
