A group of students suspended for taking part in a large fight at Natchez High School last August will soon return to the Seargent S. Prentiss Drive campus.

Two of the eight students have already returned and the other six will go back in March at the end of third nine weeks of schools, said Superintendent Dr. Carl Davis.

The group of students included Natchez High Seniors Chavis Dent and Travis Luster. The names of the other students could not be released because they are juveniles.

Following the fight, that at the time was reported as being gang-related, each student had a discipline committee and a hearing before the Natchez-Adams County School Board.

The board ruled that two of the students, who were the least involved in the fight, would only be suspended to the Central Alternative School until this month.

The remaining six students were suspended to the alternative school for the rest of the school year, but told they could return to the high school earlier if they showed good behavior.

Davis said he has been checking on the students on a regular basis.

&uot;Everything I’ve seen from these boys indicate this was an isolated situation in my opinion,&uot; Davis said.

&uot;Because of their behavior, we deserve to give them the opportunity to go back.&uot;

At the time of the fight, the boys ranged in age from 15 to 18, and included three seniors.

The students have been able to continue a normal class schedule at the central school and are still on track to graduate, Davis said.

In addition to being punished by school district officials, the students were also arrested by the Natchez Police Department and charged with disturbing the peace by fighting.
