VIDALIA, La. –&160;Vidalia’s boys and girls basketball teams showed why they are among the top 10 teams in the state by sweeping Block High in a District 3-2A contest Tuesday. In the boys game, No. 2 Vidalia defeated the Bears 94-67, while the eighth-ranked Lady Vikings held off No. 14 Block 89-75.

Vidalia’s boys dominated early, jumping out to a 12-3 advantage .

The Vikings led 25-13 at the end of the period, but had its top two players in foul trouble as Ronald Ellis had three fouls and Jarvis Vaughn picked up two.

&uot;When one of those two gets in foul trouble, we seem to go downhill,&uot; said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders.

Block fought back in the second quarter, cutting the Vidalia lead to 33-27 as Terry Russ hit two straight baskets for the Bears.

Baskets by Vaughn and Ellis pushed the Vikings back up by 13, but the Bears cut it back to 44-34 at halftime.

Block’s Robert Dunbar hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter to pull the Bears to within 63-54, but a steal and two baskets by Dariel Mays put the Vikings up 67-54 at the end of the third quarter.

&uot;I knew I had to step it up and get into a fast-tempo game,&uot; said Mays, who led the team with 28 points. &uot;I had to go from playmaker to shooter when Ronald and Jarvis got in foul trouble to try and help the team out.&uot;

The Vikings (22-2 overall and 2-1 in district) went to their up-tempo offense in the final quarter to put the game away.

&uot;Somehow we’ve fallen into this habit of having a letdown in the middle quarters,&uot; Sanders said.

Ellis finished with 17 points, while Andre Singleton and Vaughn added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Chris Kennedy added 10.

Block, 14-9, 2-2, was led by Russ with 32.

Vidalia’s girls led Block 29-20 at the end of the first quarter and 55-39 at halftime.

Two fast break baskets by Vidalia’s Wendy Paul pushed the Lady Vikings up 61-39 and Vidalia led 75-55 after three quarters.

The Lady Bears cut that lead to 81-73 with 2:09 remaining in the game, taking advantage of Lady Viking junior Brendy Ellis going out with a twisted ankle.

A 3-point basket by Brittnay Williams put Vidalia up 85-73 with 1:28 to play and the Lady Vikings held on for the win.

&uot;I think we tried to speed it up too much at times,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Lillian Johnson, whose team improved to 17-5 overall and 3-0 in district play. &uot;I think we got a little tired in the third quarter.&uot;

Ellis led Vidalia with 19 points before leaving with the injury.

Paul added 18 points, while Sharonda Anderson chipped in 11.

Shemica Beard of Block led all scorers with 38 points.

The Lady Bears fell to 14-8 overall and 0-3 in the district.
