AC girls cruise, WCCA boys get win

Laurie Davis scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter to lead the ACCS Lady Rebels to a 43-22 win over the WCCA Lady Rams Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Rebels (17-9) won despite hitting only three of 11 three-pointers and not taking one free throw in the game.

“That’s the first game I’ve ever coached in which my team didn’t shoot a single free throw in an entire ball game,” said Lady Rebels head coach Bruce Pickle.

Neither team got off to a good start in the first quarter, which ended up tied at four. ACCS went 0-for-5 behind the three-point line while all of WCCA’s first-quarter points came from the free-throw line.

The Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Rams (10-10) 12-9 in the second quarter to take a 16-13 halftime lead.

ACCS then went on a 13-0 run to break the game open. WCCA went scoreless for the first 5:13 of the quarter before Jennifer Tolbert hit a three.

All of the Lady Rams’s nine second-half points came on three threes by Tolbert, who finished with 10 points.

“We came out in the third quarter and played like we should have played the whole game,” coach Pickle said. “We made some excellent passes and moved the ball like we should. We also rebounded well.”

Davis also had seven rebounds and four steals. Amanda Walker had six points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Lady Rebels.

In the boys game, Jonathan Shivers had 26 points and 17 rebounds as the Rams defeated the Rebels 73-57.

The first quarter was dominated by the Rams (12-8) as Shivers had 11 points and eight rebounds in the quarter, compared to a total of eight points for the Rebels.

WCCA led 23-8 after the first quarter and 42-19 at halftime.

“The first half, Woodville played excellent team defense. We played poorly,” said Rebels head coach Paul Hayles. “We played better in the second half.

ACCS, 6-11, outscored WCCA 21-16 in the third quarter to trail 58-40 going into the fourth quarter.

Rusty Klienpeter had 20 points, and Clint Flowers and Brandon Cavin each had 10 points for the Rams.

Ty Smith led the Rebels with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Hayden Wadsworth finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

ACCS hosts Hillcrest in MPSA South AAAA district play next Tuesday.
