VIDALIA, La. — After almost 30 minutes of debate, the Concordia Parish Police Jury passed an ordinance Monday to raise their maximum salaries to $1,200 a month — but keep getting $856 a month for now.
&uot;We do not have the funds to draw $1,200,&uot;&160;said Cathy Darden, former Finance Committee chairperson. &uot;If something happens down the road and we can afford it, I’d be open to raising it, but I&160;can’t see it now.&uot;
&uot;I hope everyone … is responsible enough not to take $1,200 when we can’t fix potholes,&uot;&160;said Juror Rodney Smith. &uot;But I&160;don’t want to limit my fellow jurors. I’d like us to set our own individual salaries.&uot;
Later in the meeting, more than a dozen residents of the Eagle Road area near Vidalia complained that speed bumps needed to be reinstalled on the street to protect children from speeding drivers.
&uot;The people who don’t want this are the same ones who think our road is the Indianapolis 500,&uot;&160;said resident Ted Johnston.
The speed bumps were taken out because they were too high, but installing lower ones is on the Public Works Department’s list of priorities, said jury President Charlie Blaney.
In other business, jury Secretary-Treasurer Robbie Shirley reported that the jury’s criminal court fund, which pays court-related expenses, has a $9,556 deficit this month.
&uot;We don’t have enough to pay salaries,&uot;&160;Shirley said. Jurors voted to transfer $9,556 from the general fund to cover the deficit.
And the jury voted to pay $48,789.80 for repairs to one-fourth of the courthouse’s leaky roof. The jury’s request for $260,000 in capital outlay money from the Legislature for roof repairs will be altered to reflect the amount that has been spent.
