Four Miss-Lou teams will be competing in first round MPSA South A State play today at Glenbrook School in Minden, La., in hopes of earning a spot for the MPSA Class A State Tournament at Delta Academy next week.
Trinity’s boys meet Mount Olive Christian School at 5:30 p.m.
Trinity’s girls face Glenbrook at 7 p.m.
Those two games can be heard on WNAT 1450 AM.
Huntington’s girls face Riverdale at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Tensas’ girls meet Central School at 4 p.m. today.
Trinity’s boys (22-5) are seeded No. 1 from District 6 after capturing the district tournament on its home court last week.
Mount Olive is seeded No. 4 in District 5.
&uot;From what I hear they are real quick,&uot;&160;said Trinity coach David King. &uot;They are not tall. They have been to South State the last five or six years. We played them two years ago when we got to the finals. They always play good man to man defense.&uot;
King said Mount Olive has a 6-foot guard named Gant, who is similar to Trinity guard Kris Thomson.
&uot;They would have had a higher seed, but lost two district games early because their football team went to the state finals,&uot;&160;he said.
Mount Olive is located in Athens, La., which is right down the road from Glenbrook.
&uot;They’ve played in that gym four times already,&uot; King said. &uot;But if we go out and play hard and relaxed, we should be all right.&uot;
The top four teams advance to the state tournament, which means winning your first game.
Trinity’s girls are seeded No. 2 in District 6 after losing to Tensas in the district finals.
Glenbrook is seeded No. 3 in District 5.
&uot;They have a guard named Dumas who is supposed to be really good,&uot;&160;said Trinity coach Melanie Hall. &uot;They’ve also got a point guard who is supposed to be good.&uot;
Trinity’s girls are 21-7.
&uot;I feel like when our girls play the way they are capable of playing, we can beat anybody,&uot; Hall said. &uot;I think we showed that Saturday against Tensas. It’s going to take that kind of effort at South State. When you get to this point you have to play well because anything can happen.&uot;
Huntington is 10-19, pulling off two upsets to reach the final four at district.
&uot;I talked with the Mount Olive coach and he said they beat everybody with the press,&uot;&160;said Huntington coach Penny Moak. &uot;We’ll have to be able to beat their press to be able to paly with them. And we usually do a good job of taht. I would rather see presses because sometimes we have trouble slowing down our offense.&uot;
Huntington enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed out of District 6, while Riverdale is No. 1 out of District 5.
&uot;Surely the No. 1 team is a good team and we’ve got a terrible record with a roster of freshmen and sophomores,&uot; Moak said. &uot;They may walk in the gym and overlook us and that could be to our advantage. Our girls are going into this tournament with confidence, and so am I.&uot;
