Dr. David Miller, associate professor of music at Alcorn State University, recently served as associate producer for the production of the film &uot;Jazz is Spoken Here.&uot; Miller conceived the idea for the film, wrote and script and also conducted the interviews.

The film had its premier broadcast in Washington, D.C. in early February. The program may be viewed on Educational Television (ETV) in Mississippi today at 11 p.m.

It may broadcast four times over the next three years by each of th local PBS stations across the country. The initial broadcast is expected to reach three million people.

&uot;Jazz is Spoken Here&uot; ia a portrait of Ellis Marsalis, renowned jazz pianist and father of distinguished musicians Branford, Delfeayo, Jason and Wynton Marsalis. In the film Ellis talks about teaching musician and children and what he has learned about music and life.

He is shown teaching at the University of New Orleans, pulling out performances and sharing music theory in a natural way. There is live concert footage of Ellis performing with his sons along with Bob Hurst.

The program was supported by grants obtained and directed by Dr. Miller from the Southern Humanities Media Fund, the Mississippi Humanities Council, the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Southeastern Media Fund of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The project also received a grant from the Florida Arts council nd contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations.
