Four Cathedral High pitchers combined for a no-hitter and Brent Tosspon’s double drove in the go-ahead run as the Green Wave defeated the Jena Giants 3-1 Tuesday night at Liberty Park.

Starting pitcher Christopher Martin and relievers Charlie Norris, Chris Norris and Steven Bush combined allowed no hits and no earned runs, struck out nine, and walked one.

&uot;I was pleased with our pitchers tonight. They threw a lot of strikes,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley. &uot;Both teams played good defense and didn’t walk too many batters.&uot;

After two scoreless innings, Cathedral scored when shortstop Ben Eidt was hit by a pitch, stole second base, went to third on a error by pitcher Drew Johnson, and scored when right fielder Casey Rodgers flied out to center field.

Jena tied the score in the top of the sixth when shortstop Orvalle Randall reached first base on a Bush error, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Charlie Franklin and scored on a Stephen Edwards error.

Cathedral answered in the bottom of the sixth.

After Charlie Norris went to third on an error by right fielder Josh Windham, Tosspon hit a ground-rule double which brought in Norris and gave the Green Wave a 2-1 lead.

&uot;Brent’s double was a big hit for us,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We were in the lead, gave it up and got it back in the same inning.&uot;

Tosspon then scored on an error by third baseman Jory Coon to give Cathedral a two-run lead.

Bush struck out the first two batters in the top of the seventh and got Johnson to ground out to first to end the game.

&uot;I was surprised there wasn’t more scoring tonight,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We didn’t hit the ball too well and we had a few errors, but I thought we played well.&uot;

Chris Norris was the winning pitcher for Cathedral, allowing one run (unearned), no hits, struck out two and walked none.

Pat Willis, who came on relief for Johnson in the third inning, suffered the loss for Jena.

Willis allowed two runs (both unearned), one hit, struck out three and walked one.

Cathedral, 2-1, plays at Monterey on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with the JV game followed by the varsity game at 1 p.m.

In the junior varsity game, Jena defeated Cathedral 4-3.

Tosspon took the loss for Cathedral.
