The Adams&160;County Board of Supervisors made its second attempt Monday to fill a vacant position on the Natchez Regional Hospital Board.

The board voted 2-1 to nominate Jerry Cain, of the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, to replace Natchez Middle School&160;Teacher Renza Grennell.

&uot;I have observed that he works well with people,&uot; said Board President Virginia Salmon about Cain.

Supervisors Salmon and Lynwood Easterling voted for Cain and Supervisor Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell voted for Grennell.

Supervisor Darryl Grennell abstained from voting because Renza Grennell, who has served on the board 11-years, is his mother.

Because of Darryl and Renza’s family connection, some board members had questioned if it would be a conflict of interest for Renza to remain on the board.

Darryl said he was not surprised by the board’s decision.

&uot;They’ve taken experience away from the hospital board that’s for sure,&uot; he said. &uot;(But) I support whoever’s appointed. I couldn’t vote on it so I lose no sleep. I just pray the hospital will be successful in the future.&uot;

Supervisor Samuel Cauthen did not attend the meeting.

Monday’s appointment should mark the end to recent controversy over hospital board appointments.

Last month, the supervisors attempted to appoint Thelma Angelethy but she refused the position because she is a friend of Renza Grennell.

Natchez investment broker, John C. Bergeron was also appointed to the hospital board last month.

Bergeron and Cain will serve until Feb. 2003. Cain could not be reached for comment Monday because he is on vacation this week.
