Vidalia tourney on tap

A familiar face and a couple of new faces join the Vidalia High Baseball Tournament, which starts Thursday and ends with the championship game Saturday night.

Springhill returns with Vidalia alumnus Bill Moseley coaching the Lumberjacks.

Newcomers to the tournament are Natchez High and Rapides High.

Regulars Jena, Winnsboro, Cathedral and Harrisonburg are back.

&uot;We’ve got some new faces and we feel like it will be pretty competitive,&uot; said Vidalia coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir. &uot;I think anybody has the potential to win it.&uot;

The first pitch will take place Thursday at 4:30 p.m. as Jena takes on Winnsboro.

At 6:45 p.m., Cathedral meets Harrisonburg.

On Friday, Vidalia meets Natchez at 5:30 p.m., followed by Springhill versus Rapides.

&uot;Rapides has one of the top pitchers in the state in Matt Peterson, who will probably pitch Saturday,&uot; Hoffpauir said.

Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with a loser’s bracket game and continues through the day until the championship game, which is slated for 7:30 p.m.

&uot;There are some interesting matchups,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;There are a lot of 3A schools and it’s up for grabs. A lot of teams are starting district next week, so this will be a good tune-up for them.&uot;

Hoffpauir said catfish plates will be sold for $4 each and there will also be hot dogs, hamburgers and a complete concession stand.

A program will also be sold at the gate.

Each game will have a two-hour time limit.

Loser bracket games will be five innings or an hour-and-45 minute time limit.

Trophies will be awarded to first and second places and to consolation winners.

Admission is $3.
