VIDALIA, La. — In the loser’s bracket game Saturday afternoon, Natchez bounced back from a 12-0 loss to Vidalia to defeat Springhill 2-1 in extra innings.
In the winner’s bracket game, Vidalia, coming off a 12-0 win over Natchez High, fell to Rapides, 5-2.
Springhill struck first against Natchez, when Ty Hanson doubled in Daniel Moseley who had been hit by a pitch to lead off the game.
Natchez tied the score in the third inning when Carl Hayes doubled, and scored on a Calvin Jackson fielder’s choice.
The Bulldogs sent the game into extra innings in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Hayes turned a double play after catching a fly ball, then gunned down Moseley at the plate.
&uot;The out at the plate definitely was a momentum-shifter,&uot; Bulldog head coach Michael Lindsey said. &uot;It really helped motivate the kids towards the end.&uot;
Brock Barlow walked for Natchez in the top half of the sixth inning, and, with two outs, came around to score the winning run, when Springhill shortstop Brad Youngblood booted a Lance Harveston grounder.
&uot;It’s good to finally get a close game to go our way,&uot;&160;Lindsey said. &uot;We’ve lost one in extra innings, and another game by one run.&uot;
In the winner’s bracket game, Rapides winning pitcher Derek Basco established himself early, and never backed down.
Rapides jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Basco and Jeremy Richardson ripped consecutive singles. Matt Peterson successfully executed a suicide squeeze play, and a Viking error led to the runs for Rapides.
Basco led off the third inning with a single and reached second on an error on the same play. A fielder’s choice moved him to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Peterson.
Vidalia made Rapides’ second baseman Travis Steele a busy man Saturday night, as Steele had five assists and one putout in the game, three of which came in the third inning alone.
Grant Ogaard doubled with one out in the top of the fourth for Rapides, and would move around to score on a Keith Hathorn single.
In the top of the fifth for Rapides, Richardson hammered a double down the left field line, and scored on an error.
Vidalia began their bid for a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the fifth, when Ryan Boles led off the inning with a single, and Jarrett Hoffpauir reached base with one out on an error.
Colin Taunton then reached base by an error, which allowed Boles to score. A passed ball accounted for the other Vidalia run in the ball game.
&uot;We had some breakdowns on defense tonight,&uot;&160;Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
&uot;Right now, we’re just not making the routine plays on defense. Tonight we turned some singles into doubles, which really hurt us.
&uot;We’re hitting the ball just fine right now, but we’ve got to start making the plays on defense or we’re going to be in trouble.&uot;
Cathedral will meet Jena today at Vidalia starting at 2 p.m., with the winner meeting Vidalia.
