VIDALIA, La. – Vidalia High made quick work of North DeSoto in a Class 2A first round playoff contest, scoring eight runs in the first inning on its way to a 13-0 win over the Griffins Wednesday.
The game lasted only an hour and 16 minutes.
A big reason for that is the fact Vidalia senior Rod Donald gave up one hit, facing 16 batters over five innings.
&uot;Rod pitched well,&uot; said Vidalia High coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir. &uot;He kept the ball down.&uot;
Besides a single by Cash Frazier and flyout by Brandon Ezernack, no ball left the infield.
Donald struck out nine.
&uot;I was hitting my spots perfect,&uot; Donald said. &uot;I was throwing in the mid-80s and my changeup was working real good.&uot;
Vidalia’s first seven batters reached base.
Josh Hoffpauir reached on an error, Adam Probst singled, Donald walked, Kevin Laird, Matt Dillon and Bryan Bennett each singled and Ryan Boles doubled, ending Frazier’s stint on the mound. Ezernack finished the game.
&uot;It always helps when everybody is hitting,&uot; Laird said. &uot;You want to get up there and do your job. When everybody’s hitting, you have to hit them in.&uot;
Sam Morse was hit by a pitch, Hoffpauir hit a sacrifice fly and Probst singled and reached third when the ball got past the right fielder to account for the eight runs.
&uot;That really helped a lot,&uot; Donald said. &uot;I wasn’t doing it at the plate, but the team did it. They really stepped it up.&uot;
Vidalia added three in the third as Laird and Dillon singled and Bennett ripped a home run over the left centerfield fence. The round-tripper was the sophomore’s seventh of the year.
Bennett just missed a home run in his first at-bat, as the towering shot just hooked foul.
&uot;I&160;saw it hooking, but I didn’t want it to go foul,&uot; Bennett said. &uot;The home run was a fastball right down the middle.&uot;
The Vikings’ final two runs came in the fourth as Dillon walked, Boles reached on an error and Hoffpauir singled.
Vidalia totaled 11 hits over four innings and made no errors.
&uot;I think we set the tone on the first ball to Jarrett,&uot; coach Hoffpauir said, referring to Jarrett charging and short-hopping a grounder and then throwing to first for the out. &uot;I also thought our approach to the plate was real good and we showed a lot of patience.&uot;
Vidalia, 21-8, will now host Sibley in the second round in a contest that is tentatively set for Monday. Sibley, which won North DeSoto’s district, defeated Rosepine 10-0 Tuesday.
&uot;We’ve got a big district and it’s pretty tough,&uot;&160;said North DeSoto coach Ed Jordan, whose team finishes 9-13. &uot;Sibley will definitely come after you and they have a lot of speed.&uot;
