The sparkle of chrome may greet motorists on Dumas Drive, in Natchez, as resident youth show-off their Low Rider bicycles.

Dennis Williams, a 12-year-old owner of a purple Low Rider, said he likes the bikes because they get attention and shine in the sun.

People who drive by will be &uot;looking out their car at you,&uot; he said.

And the bikes also seem to get the attention from girls in the neighborhood.

&uot;All the girls look at you,&uot; Williams said.

And the girls often want to ride the bikes, said Williams and Riley Trask, a 14-year-old who also owns a Low Rider.

The bikes, which as their names implies are lower to the ground than typical bicycles, tend to have low handle bars.

They also gleam of chrome accessories, many of which are detachable.

Some of the possible accessories are chain-style steering wheels and extra tires for the back of the bike.

And for extra style, the seats on the Low Rider’s are covered in velvet.

The bike-owners sometimes deck their bikes with accessories and ride them in local parades.

&uot;It’s a show bike,&uot; Williams said.

But Trask thinks the bikes serve a duel purpose. They are both practical and for fun.

&uot;You can ride with it and just (use it) for show too,&uot; he said.

Trask said he likes to ride his Low Rider on Saturdays to get attention.

Williams said he took extra care to keep his bike inside when he was not using it and he also cares for it with oiling and cleaning.

&uot;It’s like cleaning a car,&uot; he said.
