Vidalia High’s baseball team made quick work of North DeSoto in a first round playoff game at Vidalia last Wednesday.
Viking head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir knows Vidalia’s second round battle with Sibley will not be as easy.
Vidalia, 21-8, defeated North DeSoto 13-0 in a contest that lasted an hour and 16 minutes.
Sibley defeated Rosepine 10-0 to improve to 27-5. The Raiders’ only district loss coming to Springhill.
&uot;They do a lot of things well,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said. &uot;They play solid baseball. They lay down a bunt, play hit-and-run and have a couple of guys who can hit the long ball. We’re going to have to be on top of our game.&uot;
Hoffpauir said Sibley’s top pitcher is a left-hander.
&uot;But he’s not their only pitcher,&uot;&160;he said. &uot;They have others who do a good job. They are not real overpowering, but they hit their spots well.&uot;
And they have a good defense to back those pitchers up, Hoffpauir said.
&uot;They don’t make many mistakes. And they’ve beaten a lot of big schools. They’ve played a tough schedule a lot like we have.&uot;
Rod Donald, 4-5, will start for Vidalia after allowing up one hit, facing 16 batters over five innings against North DeSoto.
Jarrett Hoffpauir, 5-0, will be ready for relief.
Hoffpauir leads the Vikings in batting with a .519 average with nine home runs and a school season record 47 runs batted in.
Donald is hitting .400 with a season record 12 home runs, while Adam Probst is batting .365.
&uot;We need our first three batters to get on base,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;And, as has been our history in the playoffs, we need to have the bottom of our order come through. They have to move people around and get on base for the top of the order.&uot;
Vidalia has hit a team record 47 home runs.
&uot;It’s come down to a one-game season from here on out,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said. &uot;We have to play our game and not let them take us out of it. We have to be able to handle the pressure.&uot;
Admission to today’s 5 p.m. game is $4 for adults and $3 for students.
