Natchez girls capture South State

Natchez High’s girls captured the Class 5A South State championship Saturday in Gulfport, while the Bulldog boys placed third.

The Lady Bulldogs totaled 127 points, while Gulfport was second with 100, Moss Point third at 76 and&160;Harrison Central fourth with 43.

&uot;We qualified in 12 events and had three doubles, which puts us in pretty good position to repeat,&uot; said Natchez coach Henry Woods.

The Lady Bulldogs shared the state title with Columbus last year.

&uot;We’ve got real good athletes this year and should be deep enough to repeat,&uot; Woods said.

Janice Davis of Natchez was first in the 100-meter dash (11.44), 200-dash (23.84) and the 400-meters (56.2).

Nakeisha Guice was first in the long jump, going 17 feet, 6 inches.

Natchez dominated the relays. The Lady Bulldog team of Davis, Ruby King, Jonda Ross and Natalie Noble won the 800-relays (1:42.34) and the 400-relays (49.41).

Tanika Hill, King, Davis and Ross won the 1600-relays in 4:11. Rosalyn Minor won the 300-hurdles in 47.16.

Gulfport won the boys division with 144 points. Brandon was second with 86 points, while Natchez totaled 62, while Provine has 42.

The Natchez boys relay team of Edwin Skipper, Roderick Conner, David Ford and Carl Butler set a school record in the 800-relays at 1:26.10. The same team won the 400-relays in 42.20.

Butler won the 400-dash in 50.10.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the state meet in Jackson Saturday.
