FAYETTE – A shooting in Jefferson County near the Natchez Trace left one man dead early Sunday afternoon, according to Sheriff Peter Walker.

Levi Thompson, 49, of Natchez, allegedly shot Edgar White Jr., 65, once in the neck with a .380-caliber pistol outside White’s home on White’s Road at about 2 p.m.

White was pronounced dead on the scene by Coroner Will Turner.

Thompson drove to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and turned himself in shortly after the shooting and is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of murder.

Officers of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were still interviewing witnesses but had not determined a motive as of Sunday evening, Walker said.

&uot; There had been disturbances at that residence in the past, but nothing between these two,&uot;&160;Walker said.

He added that Thompson had no previous criminal record.

Because of today’s Memorial Day holiday, Thompson’s first court appearance will probably be Tuesday in Jefferson County Justice Court, Walker said.
