Natchez High head boys basketball coach Mike Martin and Bulldog forward David Haywood hope to help the Mississippi All-Stars even their series with Alabama at the all-star game Saturday.
The 10th Annual Mississippi Sports Medicine Mississippi/Alabama All Star Basketball Game is slated for Holmes Community College in Goodman Saturday at 3 p.m., following the girls game.
Alabama leads the series in both games 5-4.
Martin will be assisting Murrah head coach Thomas Billups in Saturday’s game.
Martin led Natchez to a stellar 24-10 final record, including the Division 6-5A Basketball Tournament title.
The 6-foot-5, 170-pound Haywood, who scored more than 1,500 points in his prep career, averaged 23 points and nine rebounds per game.
&uot;I’m very excited about it,&uot; said Haywood, who will be playing the No. 2 guard position.
&uot;I don’t think that’s going to be a big adjustment (from forward/center). I’ll be handling the ball a lot more, but that’s about it.&uot;
Haywood is considering playing collegiately for Southern Mississippi, Kent State, Alcorn and Birmingham Southern.
Haywood said the All-Star game will also give him a chance to be contacted by more than just those schools.
Haywood said he is also looking forward to playing with a group of all-stars.
&uot;I’ll be playing with some players I went up against during the season, while at Natchez High and that should be a lot of fun, to get to play with them on my side,&uot; he said.
Tickets are $5 each and will be available at the door at 11 a.m. Saturday.
