The Natchez High School USA Track and Field Invitational took first place Saturday morning at Natchez High, and according to Natchez head coach Henry &uot;Doc&uot; Woods, &uot;it was a great day for Natchez track.&uot;
The &uot;greatness&uot; Woods spoke of had to do with the return of Natchez native Janice Davis for the first time since being named to the International Track and Field Team.
There was the debut of Utica native Otis Harris, who has won the Mobile Classic and the Foot Locker Invitational already this year, and the success of each and every Natchez trackster.
&uot;We had eight first place finishes between five people,&uot;&160;Woods said.
Davis took the first place medal in the 400 meter dash, Tiffany Collier garnered the first place medal in the 100-meter dash, Rosalyn Minor pulled down two first place finishes in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, Darius Edwards took first in both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles, and Terry Hewlitt got a first place finish in the 800 meter dash.
&uot;Everybody came out and did exactly what they were supposed to do. I&160;was very pleased,&uot;&160;Woods said.
Also for Natchez, Clifton Johnson finished with two second place medals in the 3,000-meter run and the 1500 meter run.
Harris took first place in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 22.4.
Davis’ time in the 400-meter dash was 56.13, which was good enough to earn her a gold medal in the only event she competed.
&uot;Janice came in and told all the little girls what it was like to do what she’s doing right now, and it was just a thrill to have Janice back,&uot;&160;Woods said.
Davis recently qualified to represent the United States for the International Team, which will be participating at the International Track and Field Invitational in Montreal, Canada.
Harris is also a member of the International Team.
