Janice Davis of Natchez will do a little sightseeing in Montreal today after capturing the 400-meter dash and anchoring the winning USA&160;National Track Team in the 4×400 relays Wednesday.
Davis will compete in Quebec Friday and Saturday to complete the tour.
Davis was selected to the USA&160;Junior National Team after placing second in the 400-meters at the National Junior Championships in Denton, Texas, last month.
Davis, the daughter of Dr. Benny Wright and Janice Davis, won the 400-meters in 54.71.
Davis’ mother received the call from her daughter at close to midnight Wednesday.
&uot;She said when she ran the 400 it was extremely cold,&uot;&160;Davis’ mother said, referring to 45-degree temperatures in Montreal. &uot;But she told me, ‘Mama, I’ve worked too hard and come too far to let them have it. So I shook my legs, got in the blocks and decided to go after it. I had to have it.&uot;
After winning the 400, Davis saw her 4×400 relay team fall behind in the first leg, catch up a bit in the second leg and pull even before she took the baton and finished ahead of her competitor in a time of 3.39.
&uot;She said she crossed the finish line and watched the rest come in,&uot; Davis’ mother said. &uot;She said the crowd went wild and everybody was hollering. I don’t know her split time, but I know it was better than her time in the 400.&uot;
Davis said her daughter relayed that the USA&160;coach is talking to her about competing with an international team that will compete in Santiago, Chile, in October.
