Natchez line happy with position

It’s not easy being a lineman. Linemen don’t get the spotlight or get to score touchdowns, although they practice just as hard, for just as long.

All linemen do is block. And according to the lone senior on Natchez’s squad up front, it suits him just fine.

&uot;I like blocking,&uot; Leonard Campbell said. &uot;I love my line.&uot;

Campbell lined up in the backfield in junior high, he said, but a growth spurt — he now weighs 325 pounds – and a more noble calling has him satisfied playing offensive line.

And it’s not like linemen never get any credit.

&uot;I give my line all the credit in the world,&uot; said Bulldog quarterback Donald Butler, who scored five touchdowns Friday.

Though it’s nice to hear, Natchez’s front five, Campbell, Kejuane Bates, Chris Chatman, Michael Harris and Kalup Hartwell, are used to playing second-fiddle to the backs.

&uot;We do all the work,&uot; Hartwell said. &uot;All they do is watch the hole.&uot;

Although the line was instrumental in Natchez’s 34-0 win over Jefferson County, Campbell said there is room for his unit to improve.

&uot;We made a few mistakes,&uot; he said. &uot;But it’s nothing we can’t take care of.&uot;
