NHS claims the crown at inaugural tournament

Deanna Butts had four runs batted in and Dalisa Lewis scattered six hits to lead Natchez High to a 12-2 win over Hazelhurst Saturday in the championship game of the inaugural Natchez High Invitational Softball Tournament at the Natchez Girls Softball Complex.

The game ended with Tracy Davis’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 10-run rule.

Butts went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI single in the the third inning and a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning.

&uot;Deanna did a great job,&uot; said Natchez High head coach Sue Johnson. &uot;She’s one of those players who can play at any position when we ask her to. We have several of them.&uot;

Lewis allowed two runs, both in the fourth inning, and struck out three in six innings for the win.

&uot;Dalisa was pitching flat and lost her concentration for a little bit, but she did a good job,&uot; Johnson said.

Natchez also got a triple from Crystal Brown and a double from Kelly Fuller.

&uot;We have to stay focused because the game’s not over until the last out,&uot; Johnson said. &uot;They showed a lot of character and a lot of poise. I’m proud of them.&uot;

The Lady Bulldogs got to the championship round by defeating Wilkinson County 31-2 in the first game of the tournament and Hazelhurst in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket 14-10.

Lewis was the winning pitcher in those games for Natchez (13-5).

After losing to Natchez, Wilkinson County was eliminated in the loser’s bracket by Franklin County, who came from behind for a 13-12 win.

The Lady Bulldogs of Franklin County lost to Hazelhurst 15-6 to drop into the loser’s bracket and, after defeating the Lady Wildcats, were eliminated by the Lady Indians 19-11.

Natchez plays against Cathedral next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
