Huntington hungry for another title

FERRIDAY, La. – They say good things come in threes.The Huntington softball team has spent the last two weekends winning state tournaments. A win today at the State Fast-Pitch Softball Overall Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton would certainly classify as a good thing.

&uot;We’re really excited,&uot; said Huntington catcher Erin Hedrick. &uot;We’ll play some bigger teams, but we’re just as good as they are, I think.&uot;

Hedrick should know. She and the Lady Hounds saw several of the larger schools they will face today in the Hillcrest Christian School Tournament last month, including Overall defending champion Kirk Academy and 4A juggernaut Jackson Prep.

&uot;We want Jackson Prep,&uot; who beat Huntington 8-0 at Hillcrest, said pitcher Lindsey Kay Paul. &uot;We’ve got their number now.&uot;

Paul might get her chance.

The Lady Hounds, the 1A No. 1 seed after winning last Saturday’s 1A State Tournament at Huntington, play 2A No. 2 seed Cruger-Tchula Academy at 9 a.m. in the first round, while Jackson Prep takes on Copiah Academy. If both teams win, Huntington and Prep will meet in the second round.

&uot;We’ve got a little bit of momentum,&uot; said head coach Michael McAnally. &uot;We know we can play against those teams, but we’ll have to play well.&uot;

McAnally said practice was light this week, as he wanted the girls to stay sharp but rest up for the tournament.

Paul’s shoulder needed special attention, he said, as it had been sore after last Saturday’s tournament.

&uot;She’s tough,&uot; he said. &uot;She’s our only senior, and she knows she’s got to go out there and be our leader. She’ll be ready.&uot;
