Four local high school senior student-athletes, two from Trinity Episcopal High School and two from Cathedral High School, were recently nominated by their principals for the 2000 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Trinity principal Dr. Delecia Carey nominated Tyler Burns and Lindsey K. Hunt for the award.

&uot;The (High School) Heisman recognizes good students who are also good athletes and good community citizens,&uot; Carey said.

&uot;Tyler and Lindsey are good students,&uot; he said. &uot;They play multiple sports. They have been involved in community activities such as their church and other organizations.&uot;

Burns is involved with the Jefferson Street United Methodist Church Youth Group with Habitat for Humanity and with bible school, and is involved in an Anti-Smoking Day Camp for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, sponsored by Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, Carey said.

Hunt is also an active member of the Jefferson Street United Methodist Church, holds down a full-time job every summer and is a lifeguard for Stanton Hall, Carey said.

Burns said it was quite an honor to be nominated for the award, and Hunt said she was surprised.

&uot;It was an honor to be nominated because of not only what you do academically, but also through service projects,&uot; Hunt said.

Cathedral principal Dr. Scott Fleming nominated Key Smith and Jennifer Blain for the award.

&uot;I think they fit the requirements for this award,&uot; Fleming said. &uot;They are good student-athletes. They are good models for the students. They are well-balanced students.&uot;

Blain is on the tennis and basketball teams and is a member of the Key Club, the Catholic Youth Organization, the Retreat Team and the National Honor Society.

Away from school, Blain said she spends most of her time working.

Smith is on the football, baseball and weightlifting teams and this year is joining the swimming team. He is also the president of the National Honor Society and is a member of the Retreat Team and the CYO.

Blain said she was surprised and excited to be nominated for the award.

Smith said it took both of them by surprise that they were nominated for the award.

&uot;It’s quite an honor for Dr. Fleming to think so high of Jennifer and myself,&uot; Smith said.
