Ferriday Trojans must hurdle Block to stay unbeaten

FERRIDAY, La. – Undefeated Ferriday received a wake-up call last week when Farmerville took the Trojans to overtime before Ferriday eeked out a 21-20 win.
&uot;Even if some of us thought we couldn’t be beat, that showed us that we can,&uot; Ferriday coach James McFarland said. &uot;They got my attention.&uot;
So McFarland and his crew are taking no chances when they host 2-5 Block at 7 p.m. today.
&uot;They’re not playing very well right now,&uot; McFarland said of the Jonesville team. &uot;But when we played them last year we won 21-20 by the skin of our teeth, and they weren’t playing very well then, either.&uot;
Block will use a multiple set offense, McFarland said.
&uot;I’ve seen them come out in the box, the spread, the pro – I’ve seen them in practically everything,&uot; McFarland said. That causes problems for the defense, he added, &uot;because you have to prepare for everything.&uot;
Even though there is a healthy rivalry between Ferriday (7-0, 1-0) and Block because of the proximity of the two schools, the Trojans see this as just another game, McFarland said.
&uot;We just want to be district champions,&uot; he said. &uot;They’re just another team in our way to being district champions.
&uot;We want to beat everybody.&uot;
Loyola Prep at Vidalia
The Vidalia Vikings hope to rebound from a 28-12 road loss last week when they host Loyola Prep at 7 p.m. Friday.
&uot;We had opportunities,&uot; Vidalia coach Dee Faircloth said of last week’s game at McCall, noting that the Vikings drove twice to McCall’s 1-yard-line without scoring. &uot;But we’re too young. Youngsters make mistakes.&uot;
After losing 20 seniors to graduation, the Vikings this year have been forced to play a number of freshmen and sophomores.
&uot;But they’ll be back next year. They better get us while they can.&uot; he said of the remaining teams on Vidalia’s schedule.
However, at 3-4 after a difficult schedule, Vidalia is still very much in the post-season hunt.
&uot;We’re still in the picture,&uot; Faircloth said. &uot;It’ll be better if we beat Loyola.&uot;
The 2-5, pro-I team from Shreveport has played some very tough 3A and 4A opponents this season, Faircloth said.
&uot;They’re always in the playoffs,&uot; he said. &uot;They’ll probably go this year too, despite their record.&uot;
