The Cathedral Green Wave looks to pick up its first win of the season against the Wesson Cobras in a District 7-2A homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. tonight at D’Evereaux Stadium.
Cathedral is 0-6 overall and 0-3 in district play while Wesson is 3-5 overall and 0-2 in district play.
Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley said practice this week has not gone as well as he would have liked, even with two weeks of practice after a bye week.
&uot;We haven’t been focused this week because of the homecoming activities,&uot; he said. &uot;We need to be mentally ready and focused on the game.&uot;
Cathedral will be without sophomore offensive guard and defensive journeyman Jeff Chandler, who is out for the season after braking his collarbone in a junior varsity game last Monday night.
Cathedral will face a Wesson team which is in a rebuilding year and &uot;is made up of a lot of sophomores,&uot; Beesley said.
Wesson runs a wishbone offense out of the backfield and uses fullback traps up the middle, he said.
&uot;Their passing game is not their strong point,&uot; he said. &uot;They like to run the ball a lot. Their offensive line is bigger than ours.&uot;
The Cobras’ running game is led by sophomore fullback Russell Robinson.
&uot;He’s a good fullback,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;He’s a real strong kid. He’s not real flashy but he can break tackles.&uot;
Wesson runs a 4-4 defense, Beesley said, led by Robinson and junior Billy Ray Miller at the middle linebacker position.
&uot;Billy Ray has good speed and covers sideline to sideline,&uot; Beesley said.
Beesley said his offense may throw the ball more than it did against St. Andrews two weeks ago because of the dry weather.
&uot;We’ve moved the ball well, but our problem has been scoring because of turnovers, especially in the red zone.&uot;
Beesley said the keys to the game will be &uot;tackling, coming out in the first half and playing good defense.&uot;
&uot;Whichever line ends up playing the best (wins),&uot; he said.
