Natchez boys, girls take Lanier to mat

Jamel Bouldin scored 20 points and hit four three-point shots to lead the Natchez Bulldogs to a stunning 70-64 win over the Lanier Bulldogs Thursday night at the Natchez High gym.

Natchez (4-1) won the game despite Lanier’s making 18-of-21 free throws to only 7-of-10 free throws for the home team.

Natchez played without Chris Logan, whose knee locked up during pre-game drills.

&uot;We won this game for Chris. We knew he wanted to play this game,&uot; Bouldin said. &uot;We had to play hard.&uot;

Natchez led 19-12 after the first quarter, but Lanier outscored Natchez 23-17 in the second quarter to trail by one at halftime.

&uot;With Lanier coming off their big win over Murrah, which was ranked number one in the state, that gets anybody’s attention,&uot; said Natchez High head coach Mike Martin.

Natchez went into the fourth quarter with a 50-48 lead, but Lanier’s Bruce Crawford nailed a three-pointer with 7:50 left to give the visiting Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 51-50.

The lead changed hands several time over the next 5:33 seconds until Nakarrie Thompson’s jumper with 1:17 left gave the home team Bulldogs the lead for good at 66-64.

Bouldin made two of his four three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Bouldin, Burton Broudy and Vasshun Newborne hit 4-of-6 free throws in the last 48 seconds of the game to secure the win.

Broudy had 13 points, Newborne had nine points, eight rebounds and two steals, and Thompson had seven points, six rebounds and two steals.

Je’Kel Foster led Natchez in steals with five to go along with his seven points and four rebounds.

Soloman Foster led Lanier (3-2) with 18 points and made 7-of-8 free throws and Derrick Melton had 14 points and hit three three-pointers.

In the varsity girls game, the Natchez Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lanier Lady Bulldogs 71-53.

Gloria Lewis led Natchez with 24 points and Crystal Brown had 21.

Lashanda Griffin had 14 points and Chyla Miller had 12 for Lanier. Natchez plays at Jackson Provine beginning at 6 p.m. next Tuesday.
