The Wilkinson County Wildcats hit the road to face the Magee Trojans in a Mississippi Class 3A state quarterfinals game at 7 p.m. Friday.

Wilkinson County (9-1), the Division 6-3A champion, edged Greene County 13-7 in last Friday’s first-round playoff contest.

Senior fullback/linebacker Mark Fredrick scored both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns, had 14 carries for 100 yards and one catch for 15 yards on offense. Defensively, he had 18 tackles, five assists and one fumble recovery.

Junior quarterback Travis Dent completed three of 10 passes for 47 yards.

Junior running back/linebacker Carl Cage had nine carries for 80 yards on offense and had eight tackles, four assists and one interception on defense.

Magee (10-2) routed Velma Jackson 42-0 in its first-round playoff game.

&uot;They’re always traditionally tough,&uot; said Wilkinson County head coach John Moore of this week’s opponent. &uot;We know it’s going to be tough.&uot;

Magee runs a wing-set and a double wing-set offense, Moore said.

&uot;They’re pretty balanced on offense,&uot; he said. &uot;They run quite a bit, but they also run a lot of play-action pass. They’ve got a couple of good running backs in Willie Hall and A.J. Holloway. They also like to throw to their wingback out of the backfield a lot.&uot;

&uot;They also have a pretty-good size offensive line,&uot; he said. &uot;They have a couple of guys over 290 pounds.&uot;

Defensively, Magee runs a 4-3 defense that Moore said is good, but not real big.

&uot;They rely on a lot of quickness on their front four,&uot; he said.

The Wildcats will try to mix up their offense more, he said, instead of relying heavily on their running game, which means Dent will have to have a better game than he did last Friday against Greene County.

Defensively, Moore said his team must stop Magee’s running game in order to have a chance to win the game.
