Ashley Murphy scored all of her 14 points in the second half as the Central Hinds Academy Lady Cougars came back from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Adams County Christian Lady Rebels 32-29 Thursday night at the Rebel Gym.

For a while, it did not look like either team would score that many points.

Central Hinds was scoreless for the first 4:32 of the first quarter until Alisa Deviney’s jumper. That would be the only points of the quarter for the Lady Cougars.

Deviney finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

The Lady Rebels (1-5) got only one point in the first quarter on a free throw by Amy Mardis with 59.1 seconds left.

The second quarter was a different story as ACCS outscored Central Hinds 17-7 to take an 18-9 halftime lead.

Central Hinds cut the lead to three in the third quarter on Murphy’s two three-pointers, the second with 4:35 left, but scored only three more points in the quarter.

However, the Lady Cougars’ defense shut down the Lady Rebels, holding them to just four points in the third quarter.

ACCS had a 25-18 lead with 3:30 left in the game and appeared well on its way to snapping its three-game losing streak.

That was until the Lady Cougars staged its big comeback, led by clutch shooting by Murphy and Deviney.

Murphy’s jumper with 19 seconds left gave Central Hinds a 30-29 lead, its first since the end of the first quarter.

Mendy Whitehead’s basket with 4.7 seconds iced the win for the Lady Cougars.

&uot; We’ll get better,&uot; said Lady Rebels head coach Bruce Pickle.

Casey Stutzman led the Lady Rebels with 11 points, eight of them in the second quarter.

The Lady Rebels next play in the Parklane Tournament Nov. 20-21 and 24-25 in McComb.

In the varsity boys game, the Central Hinds Cougars jumped out to a big first quarter lead and cruised to a 51-32 win over the ACCS Rebels.

Central Hinds won easily despite missing 10 of 19 free throws.
