Election ordeal has dragged on long enough

Vice President Al Gore should concede. In an election saga that has dragged on for nearly three weeks now, the American public has waited in disbelief as officials counted and recounted and recounted ballots in Florida.

The tasking recounts have whittled George W. Bush’s lead over Gore to just hundreds of votes in Florida – the swing state whose 25 electoral college votes will give either candidate the needed votes for victory.

And, in a battle that has moved from the ballot box to the courtrooms, both candidates have now called on the law to help their effort.

But, Gore announced on Saturday that unless he wins outright in recount totals reported today he will appeal the results and continue to push for resolution through the courts system.

That is regrettable for the American public, who deserve a resolution to this saga and who deserve the opportunity to have their voices heard through the ballot boxes – not to have an election dictated by the legal system.

Gore – and Bush – are missing an opportunity to show true leadership – true, presidential leadership – to the country.

We would hope whoever is behind after the end of tomorrow’s counting period would simply concede … and let us get on with the business of our lives and our country.
