Roxie volunteer firefighters sorely in need of equipment

ROXIE – The status of the Roxie Volunteer Fire Department is almost life threatening.

Even though more than 10 people volunteer at the station, the department only has turnout gear, or firefighter suits, for about three of them, said Assistant Chief Mark Youngblood.

Without a suit, firefighters are prohibited from entering a burning building even if they need to rescue someone, Youngblood said.

So to help the Roxie community, Natchez resident and Roxie business owner Marie Cater is organizing a fundraiser.

&uot;We desperately need the suits because they need to protect the (firefighters) as well as whoever they’re&uot; trying to save, Cater said.

An inexpensive turnout suit costs around $700, Cater said.

Cater, the owner of Clutter Box Flea Market in Roxie, is holding a spaghetti dinner from 1 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Roxie town square.

In addition to serving the meals, Cater also plans to provide activities for the children to help raise money. These include a cakewalk and pictures with Santa Claus.

Anyone who would like to assist in the fundraiser or would like more information can call 445-8130 or 601-322-9978.

Tickets for the meals cost $5.
