FERRIDAY, La. – Ferriday High’s varsity basketball teams scored a pair of impressive wins Thursday in the Coca-Cola/Ferriday High School Invitational Tournament.

In the varsity girls game, the Lady Trojans cruised to a 56-16 win over the Sicily Island Lady Tigers.

Ferriday’s Monique Jones led all players in scoring and rebounding with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Shanell Jones added 10 rebounds and KeAnna Green chipped in with nine points.

The first quarter was all Ferriday as the Lady Trojans held Sicily Island scoreless to take a 17-0 lead.

Ferriday (7-5) didn’t let up in the second quarter and took a 35-3 halftime lead.

&uot;The first half was a breeze,&uot; said Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron. &uot;We forced a lot of turnovers which led to some easy baskets.&uot;

&uot;Our press was too much for them,&uot; she said.

Sicily Island (0-7) got its only points in the half from Rachel Ginyard.

&uot;I’ve got a young team this year,&uot; said Lady Tiger head coach Tommy Branch. &uot;All I’m asking them to do is play hard so they can improve.&uot;

The Lady Tigers actually outscored the Lady Trojans 10-7 in the fourth quarter, but the game was already out of reach.

Rutrana Branson led Sicily Island with six points and April Washington added four points.

In the varsity boys game, Ferriday used a 20-6 second quarter to break open a close game en route to a 68-27 win over the Block Bears.

Jason Scott led Ferriday (8-4) with 28 points – including two dunks and one three-pointer – and 15 rebounds.

Derrick Williams also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans.

After a sluggish first quarter which had Ferriday leading Block (4-6) 11-9, the Trojans took control of the game with their big second quarter.

&uot;I thought we came out with a lot of intensity,&uot; said Trojans head coach James Davis. &uot;They got on the boards and played good defense.&uot;

Scott already had a double-double by halftime with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

&uot;Jason always comes to play,&uot; Davis said. &uot;But we need others to step up their play.&uot;

The third quarter was even worse for the Bears as they were outscored 22-2 in the period.

Ferriday shot 80 percent (16-for-20) from the free-throw line in the game.

Charles Branch led Block with 10 points and seven rebounds and Howard Hatten added eight points.

Ferriday’s girls team plays the winner of tonight’s Vidalia/Block game in the finals at 6 p.m. Saturday and the boys team plays the winner of the Vidalia/Sicily Island game in the finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
