Reindeer beware: Area hunters have sent Santa their requests

With Christmas literally just around the corner and hunting season well under way, most hunters would probably like an all-terrain vehicle or some kind of weapon with the latest in advanced technology.

But for the most part, the best-selling items this holiday season actually have to do with what to wear, especially with the recent cold snap that has gripped the Miss-Lou area.

Jeremy Wallace of Sports Center/Rex Sporting Goods in downtown Natchez said one of the most popular items sold there is called Duofold.

&uot;Duofold is basically thermal wear,&uot; Wallace said.

Homer Hewitt of Hewitt’s Archery & Pro Shop in Ferriday said people have been buying things like heavy coats, face masks, fleeces, heavy socks and heavy gloves.

According to Wallace, some of the other more popular items sold at Sports Center/Rex Sporting Goods include the RotoDuck – a mechanical deck decoy – and the M-1 Super 90 shotgun.

&uot;It’s a real good gun,&uot; he said.

Hewitt said some of the other best-selling items at his business include deer stands and bow packages, stocking stuffers such as pocket knives and chemical hand heaters and, for duck hunting, duck lanyards, duck calls and motorized ducks.

&uot;The motorized ducks cost anywhere from $149 to $300,&uot; Hewitt said. &uot;Some have remote controls that’ll make their wings flap. It’s effective. It works.&uot;

Hewitt said he has been surprised at the number of people who have spent that much money for that one item.

As far as what hunters want for Christmas, Wallace said one hunter, Jamie Tyson of Natchez, was looking at a new deer stand from Summit and another hunter, Gene Tuccio, also of Natchez, was looking for a nice muzzle loader package.

After thinking about it for a few minutes, Brent Smith of Vidalia, La., said, &uot;A four-wheeler would be nice.&uot;
