FAYETTE – Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department authorities have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of a Poplar Hill teen last week.
Terrance J. Banks, 17, of Fayette is being charged with manslaughter in the death of 15-year-old Jimmy Ellis. Banks was a friend of the deceased.
Ellis was shot once in the right side of the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun Thursday in what was first believed to be a hunting accident.
After an investigation concluding Tuesday, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries ruled out a hunting accident, Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker said.
Walker said investigators already had reason to believe the shooting was not a hunting accident, but had to treat it as one because it was initially reported as such.
Sheriff’s office investigators will now continue the investigation to determine motive for the shooting, Walker said. The possibility of an accident has not been ruled out, he said.
