WNAT gives local team late present

Last summer, while the Natchez Wallace 11-12 All-Star team was playing in the State Tournament and then in the Dixie Youth World Series in Marshall, Texas, Alan Perkins had an idea.
&uot;We carried all the games every night, including the playoffs and World Series,&uot; said Perkins, the general manager of WNAT 1450 AM.
His idea was to record the broadcasts of several games and make them into compact discs for the players.
The CDs, 11 per set, contain the last two games of the state tournament, which the team won, and the four games of the Dixie Youth World Series the team played in.
Natchez Wallace went 2-2 in the World Series and finished a respectable fourth place in the nation.
&uot;Our sports director, Jimmy Frederick, was in Texas and we recorded (the games) at the station and we had the capability to make CDs,&uot; Perkins said.
The radio station made the master CDs and had them duplicated by a company in Memphis, Tenn., which cost about $1,200, he said.
&uot;They arrived back here at Christmas, but everyone was out of town,&uot; he said.
Better late than never, the station offered the Natchez Wallace team a late Christmas present Thursday. The team was brought on air not only to receive the CDs but also to talk about the state tournament and the World Series.
And although some of the players were nervous on the mike, all of them were excited about receiving the CDs.
&uot;It’s nice of them to give them to us,&uot; said David Alton New III.
&uot;I knew they were going to give us some CDs, but I didn’t know when we would get them,&uot; said Timmy Foster. &uot;I was surprised we were on the radio.&uot;
&uot;I’m really glad that we’re getting the CDs so we can listen to (the games) and remember them,&uot; said Drew David.
Perkins said he is not offering the CDs for sale, adding that &uot;each CD is about $5, so that’s $55 a set. That’s a lot of money.&uot;
