Mona Ross said she &uot;couldn’t help but cry&uot; Saturday while watching the inauguration on television Saturday. &uot;Just the fullness of it – the implication of all we did go through,&uot;&160;said the chairman of Concordia Parish Republican executive committee. &uot;It proves that God does win in the end.&uot;
Just weeks after the uncertain election was resolved, George W. Bush officially became the 43rd president Saturday.
The inauguration ceremony led many local Republicans and Democrats to hope both parties will work together to move the country forward.
&uot;(George Bush’s speech) reminded me of Ronald Reagan’s, which was real good,&uot; Ross said. &uot;I was very pleased. I think he’ll make a good president.&uot;
Adams County Circuit Clerk M.L. &uot;Binkey&uot; Vines, who is a Democrat, also thought Bush delivered a positive speech.
&uot;I thought it was a great inauguration,&uot; Vines said. &uot;I think it’s a great turning point for the country.
Vines said he thinks Bush will try to represent every American, whether Democrat or Republican.
&uot;I feel like he’s going to reach out to Americans and he’s going to bring a cross-section of Americans into his cabinet and his White House,&uot; Vines said.
Adams Count Supervisor Darryl Grennell, a member of Adams County Democratic Executive Committee, said he did not hear Bush’s speech, but he had been watching some of the inaugural events throughout the day.
&uot;I just hope that we can continue to move forward in this country,&uot; he said. &uot;I just hope everything continues to progress for the betterment of everybody.&uot;
Grennell said he was impressed to see Bush’s family spending time with former president, Bill Clinton, and his family.
&uot;I hope that’s a sign of working together for the future,&uot; Grennell said.
Natchez Aldermen Sue Stedman, who is a republican, said it was a relief to see the inauguration take place after all that has happened in recent months.
&uot;I felt very relieved and very comfortable today knowing that it’s finally here,&uot; Stedman said.
She said she was also pleased with message Bush presented during his speech.
&uot;I think he is trying to reach out across party lines and to the people who didn’t vote for him and that’s what it’s going to take,&uot; Stedman said.
&uot;I think he’s going to make us a good president,&uot;&160;said Adams County Sheriff Tommy Ferrell.
