Cauthen: Pay raise for supervisors not likely this session

A proposed bill to increase salaries for county supervisors is not likely to get far with the Mississippi Legislature, Adams County Supervisors President Sammy Cauthen said Wednesday.
&uot;I think the supervisors’ association supported it, but I don’t think there’s much chance of it going anywhere,&uot; Cauthen said.
Even if it passes, Cauthen is not certain Adams County supervisors need a raise. &uot;If taxes had to be raised, I don’t think we do,&uot; he said.
Officials with the Mississippi&160;Association of Supervisors went before the House Fees and Salaries committee Tuesday to promote a bill giving 15 percent raises to supervisors. They have also proposed a bill to give 10 percent raises to all county elected officials. Salaries for county supervisors range from $25,529 in smaller counties to $37,343 in larger counties and are linked to a county’s total assessed valuation.
Supervisors in Adams County make $33,548 annually.
The Legislature authorizes pay raises for the supervisors but individual boards must vote for the raise themselves.
With funds tight, Adams County Supervisor Virginia Salmon said she has voted against a salary increase the last two times the Mississippi Association of Supervisors has discussed it.
&uot;I think I would be hypocritical if I said I wanted a raise when it affects people like it does,&uot; Salmon said.
Lately counties have been having to look at their budgets so closely and appropriations have been so streamlined. Salmon said.
&uot; For us to ask for (a raise) I think somebody is not thinking clearly,&uot; Salmon said.
Supervisor Lynwood Easterling said he also had doubts about requesting a salary increase.
&uot;I know how short funds are everywhere so I’d have to do some thinking on that,&uot; he said.
Supervisor Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell took a different approach to issue.
&uot;Hell yeah, I’m going to take it,&uot; Campbell said of a salary increase.
He thinks the supervisors earn their salary and deserve a raise.
&uot;If the Legislature passes the law, without a doubt I’m going to support it,&uot; he said.
