FERRIDAY,&160;La. – Jackie Thomas’ buzzer-beating shot touched nothing but net. Jarvis Vaughn’s only dunk attempt of the night bounced off the rim and into the stands.
It was one of those nights for the Vikings, as the No. 8 Ferriday Trojans dropped a bomb on No. 11 Vidalia Tuesday, winning 78-50.
&uot;I didn’t expect that, but I knew we could win this game,&uot; said Ferriday coach James Davis. &uot;Our guys were extremely focused.&uot;
That was obvious when the Trojans took a 27-6 lead in the first quarter, a run ended with authority when a Lakendrick Nix steal set up a Jason Scott dunk.
&uot;I think that first quarter took us out of sync,&uot; said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders. &uot;After that quarter, we never did get back into it.&uot;
Vidalia (17-9, 1-3) also got into foul trouble early, racking up 10 team fouls early in the second quarter and sending the Trojans (18-9, 3-1) to the line often.
&uot;There was a foul discrepancy, and foul trouble did hurt us, but you can’t put it on that,&uot; Sanders said. &uot;We were just out-hustled.&uot;
Despite only scoring 16 points in the first half, Vidalia’s offense rebounded in the third quarter with a 16-point effort. Vidalia’s defense, however, couldn’t stop Ferriday, whose lead increased steadily until both teams began playing their bench in the fourth quarter.
&uot;We’ve been able to build big leads before, but they sometimes got away from us,&uot; Davis said. &uot;I told them that when you’ve got somebody down, you’ve got to kill them. You’ve got to knock the fire out of them.&uot;
Jason Scott was on fire for Ferriday with a game-high 32 points and 17 rebounds. Derrick Williams scored 17 points and Thomas added 10.
Jarvis Vaughn led Vidalia with 20 points.
The Ferriday win keeps the Trojans’ hope of a District 3-2A title alive, but with No. 1-ranked McCall on the horizon, that title won’t come easily.
&uot;We’re still in the hunt,&uot; Davis said, even though Ferriday lost to undefeated McCall last Friday. &uot;If we beat MCall here, we’re tied for the district championship. From here on, every game is for the district title.&uot;
Vidalia, though, gets a first crack at McCall when the Vikings travel there Friday. Ferriday’s title run begins anew on Friday when the Trojans travel to Crowville.
