FERRIDAY, La. – Defeating the No. 2 team in the state is a tall order. No wonder it took the Lady Trojans an extra period to earn the win.

An early lead and another spectacular game from Monique Jones helped No. 15 Ferriday defeat the second-ranked Lady Vikings 76-71 Tuesday, in overtime.

Jones racked up 33 points, 20 rebounds and three steals in an attempt to pace the Lady Vikings’ Natalie McGraw, who finished with 37 points and three steals.

McGraw scored 16 points in the third quarter to help Vidalia (23-5, 3-1) overcome a 33-25 halftime deficit. Jones and McGraw traded baskets for much of the second half, which ended after a McGraw lay-up following a Brendy Ellis steal forced overtime.

Fouls caught up with the Lady Vikings in the extra period, though, as Ellis fouled out and Jones and Torisheka Taylor each went 2-for-2 from the line.

&uot;We beat ourselves in the first half,&uot; Vidalia coach Lillian Johnson said. &uot;I think the girls wanted it so bad they tensed up.&uot;

&uot;I think the turning point was when Brendi fouled out,&uot; Ferriday coach Lisa Abron said. &uot;I think some of the girls got it in their heads that they couldn’t stop Natalie and Brendi. When one of them went out, it was like they had a chance.&uot;

Ellis scored 17 points, but none in overtime. She added seven rebounds and eight steals.

Taylor finished with 24 points for Ferriday (15-10, 3-1), and Jessica Griggs added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Ferriday win snaps a 17-game Lady Viking winning streak.
