Six-year-old makes splash at meet

Many 6-year-olds are just learning to swim. Taylor White is winning swim meets.

With four first-place finishes, Taylor was the high point winner of the Hub Fins Swim Meet in Hattiesburg held Jan. 27-28.

&uot;With little kids, you have good days and bad days,&uot; said Natchez swim team coach Tammy Whittington. &uot;Taylor had a good day.&uot;

Taylor won the 25-meter freestyle (21.68), the 50-meter freestyle (49.71), the 25-meter backstroke (25.30) and the 25-meter breaststroke (34.01).

She also placed second in the 25-meter butterfly with a time of 29.87, a tenth of a second off the lead.

&uot;She knocked four seconds off her butterfly time, and about four seconds off her 50-meter free,&uot; Whittington said. &uot;That’s a lot for a 6-year-old.&uot;

Taylor is the daughter of Emily and Reagan White.

In the 6 and under boys division, Rudy Timm finished second in the 25-meter backstroke, third in the 50-meter freestyle and fifth in the 25-meter freestyle. Wesley Beck finished eighth in both the 25-meter freestyle and the 25-meter backstroke. Nate Beck placed 11th in the 25-meter freestyle.

In the 8 and under girls division, Margaret Ward placed first in the 50-meter backstroke, fourth in the 50-meter butterfly and fifth in the 25-meter backstroke. Katie Steele finished seventh in the 100-meter freestyle and Madilyn Cross placed fourth in the 25-meter freestyle, the 25-meter backstroke and the 50-meter breaststroke.

The relay team of of Cross, Steele, Ward and Sarah Bryan placed third in the 200-meter freestyle.

In the 10 and under girls division, Lissa McMannus placed third in the 100-meter backstroke and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter backstroke.

The relay team of McMannus, Ward, Cross and Katherine Timm placed third in the medley relay.

The state meet for 8 and under swimmers will be Saturday, Feb. 10, in Laurel.
