Franklin County got all the scoring it needed from senior Amy Newell as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Cathedral Lady Green Wave 2-0 Wednesday night at D’Evereaux Field.
Newell scored her first goal with 21:38 remaining in the first half and her second goal took place just over 10 minutes later.
The first half was dominated by the Lady Bulldogs, who kept Cathedral (1-10) on its side of the field for much of the half.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with Cathedral goalie Erica Rollins and Franklin County (9-7) goalie Katie Johnson making several outstanding saves.
Rollins had seven saves, and Johnson had six saves in the game.
&uot;We found a couple of players to replace the seniors (for next season) in Shalonda Collins, who played good defense tonight, and Keely Ballard,&uot; said Cathedral coach Rocky Kettering.
Cathedral hits the road to play Wesson at 5:30 p.m. today at the Brookhaven Sports Complex in Brookhaven.
Members of the Lady Green Wave team said the game is important to the team for more than one reason.
&uot;It would be very important (to defeat Wesson), especially for the seniors,&uot; said sophomore Joanna Stubbs. &uot;It would be our second game to win. It would get us pumped up for next year.&uot;
&uot;We worked hard for a win,&uot; said junior Valerie Orcutt. &uot;It would be great to get a win. As long as we play well, then we’ve had a good season.&uot;
