Vidlaia, La. – Jarret Hoffpauir moved to the top of the Vidalia record book in style on Saturday when his three-run homer in the bottom of the third gave him his 149th career hit, one more than older brother Josh. The record-breaking hit was about the only thing dramatic about the contest, as Vidalia built an 18-0 lead on the way to a 22-10 victory over McCall.
&uot;We kept our intensity up for three innings, but we kinda took a step or two back in the last couple of innings,&uot; Vidalia Head Coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
McCall’s biggest problem was an inability to throw the ball over the plate. Starting pitcher Darryl McNeal allowed only one hit before he was pulled in the second inning, but six base on balls and a hit batter helped Vidalia chase him from the mound with a 8-0 lead. His replacement, Krim Kashif, didn’t fair much better. He walked Bryan Bennett to load the bases and gave Vidalia a free run when he hit Barry Bowden. Trey White then collected the first of only two Viking hits in a 13-run, 17-batter second inning that saw Vidalia take control 15-0.
The lead grew to an impressive 18-0 in the bottom of third when Hoffpauir blasted his record-breaking homer, his seventh of the year.
&uot;That is a great accomplishment for Jarrett, and I know no one will be more proud of him than his brother (Josh),&uot; Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;It was certainly the perfect way to break the record.&uot;
With the comfortable lead, Viking starting pitcher Barry Bowden was pulled after three innings. He had been impressive in the short stint, allowing no runs and only one hit while striking out 7. However, once Bowden was removed from the mound, the rest of the Viking pitching staff began to suffer from the same control problems plaguing McCall. It took three different Viking hurlers to get McCall out of the fourth inning. The visitors collected only one hit, but two errors and seven base on balls allowed McCall to score seven runs to cut the lead to 18-7. Vidalia got four of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Hinson got the offense started with a two-out single, and Doug Warsaw followed with a RBI single for a 19-7 lead. Hank Marlin also singled in the frame, and Ty Eastman collected a RBI double as the Vidalia advantage grew to 22-7.
A three-run homer by Kashif made it 22-10, but that was as close as McCall would get before the game was called on the 10-run rule.
&uot;We got to play some younger kids today, and they didn’t respond the way I would have liked,&uot; Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;But they are good kids, and they will continue to get better. I think I’ll keep them.’
The win improves Vidalia’s record to 13-3 on the year, 2-0 in the district.
