Hoffpauir breaks records en route to Vikings’ victory

VIDALIA, La. – The Vidalia Vikings scored 13 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 24-1 win over the Ferriday Trojans Wednesday night in a District 3-2A game.

Senior Jarrett Hoffpauir broke several records, many of which were held by his older brother, Josh Hoffpauir.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Vidalia pitchers Doug Warshaw and Trey White combined for 13 strikeouts (Warshaw, 10 in four innings; White, 3 in the fifth inning) and held Ferriday to one hit, a double by Robert Taylor.

&uot;Doug threw four solid innings and he needed it,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir.

With two home runs in the game, Jarrett tied the single-season home run record of 14 that was set by Seth Greer in 1998.

In his second at-bat of the first inning, Jarrett broke Rod Donald’s career home run of 28 and with his second homer of the game increased his total to 30 – and counting.

Jarrett also broke three records that were held by Josh – stolen bases in a career with 64 (Josh had 62); single-season scoring record with 50 after scoring five times Wednesday (Josh, 48 in 1996); single-season extra-base hits with 29 (Josh, 26 in 1996); and career singles record with 90 (Josh had 89).

As a team, Vidalia had 19 hits and committed no errors.

&uot;We got to swing the bat,&uot; coach Hoffpauir said. &uot;Our guys stayed focused throughout the game even though it got out of hand in the first inning.&uot;

Hoffpauir went 4-for-4 with the two homers, a double and a single and had six runs batted in. Ryan Boles was 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs.

Vidalia (19-4, 5-0) hosts McCall in district play at 1 p.m. Friday.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at McCall today.

Ferriday (2-4, 0-4) hosts Crowville in district play Monday at a time to be announced.
