The Vidalia Vikings were going to make sure a possible one-game playoff would not be needed to win their seventh straight district championship and nine in the past 10 years.

They closed the deal on the District 3-2A title Tuesday night with a 10-0 win over the Block Bears in five innings at the Vidalia baseball field.

How dominant has Vidalia’s baseball program been since 1992? The only year the Vikings did not win a district title was 1994, when they came in second place in District 2-3A.

Vidalia High senior Jarrett Hoffpauir gave up only three hits and walked two while striking out four to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Brian Wade pitched four innings, allowing only three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four, walking four and hitting three batters.

Vidalia improved to 22-4 overall and 7-0 in district play while the Bears from Jonesville dropped to 15-8 overall and finished district play at 6-2.

&uot;With the conditions we had today, our kids battled through them,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir about the strong wind which blew directly into the park.

Hoffpauir got Wade to hit into a 6-4-3 double play in the top of the first inning and then got Jeremy Washington to hit into a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth inning.

No Block baserunners got past second base the entire game.

&uot;Jarrett pitched well. We had some good defense behind him,&uot; coach Hoffpauir said.

Vidalia scored its first two runs in the bottom of the first when Hoffpauir, who led off with a double, scored on a Bubba Wyles single.

Wyles later scored when Ty Eicemann drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The Vikings then scored three more times an inning later on an RBI single by Ryan Boles and two walks with the bases loaded twice.

Vidalia could’ve done even more damage those two innings, but left the bases loaded both times

The bottom of the fourth inning was the big blow for Block as the Bears committed five errors, which led to two of Vidalia’s four runs.

Wade also balked when he dropped the ball out of his hand, allowing Eicemann to score. Hoffpauir had an RBI double that scored Jamie Fuqua from first.

With Boles on third and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Stephen Welch hit a fly ball deep enough to right field to allow Boles to score the game’s final run.

&uot;We had chances today, but we got big hits,&uot; coach Hoffpauir said.

Vidalia will travel to Crowville Thursday, beginning with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.

Vidalia will then conclude its regular season when it hosts Winnsboro at 5 p.m. Friday.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play on Mar. 24, but the game was rained out. The times for the JV and varsity game will be determined today.
